Lately, I have been thinking a lot about the level of risk associated with different careers. I came to the conclusion that being a business owner is one of the riskiest (and scariest) careers to have. I have heard too many people tell me they did not start their own company because of the risks involved. They also usually gave me some statistic about failing businesses that supported their fear.

Even when people do have the courage to start a business, the fear does not end there. Business owners sometimes will play it safe and miss an incredible opportunity just because they are afraid of failing. Fear can hold business owners back from letting their business thrive.

The truth is that you are taking a risk. And you probably are going to fail at something at least one. Do not think that a failure means you should stop chasing your dream. Too many people take their mistakes as signs that they are in the wrong career. Take your mistakes and learn from them. Take those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Take risks. You will regret the things that you did not do more than you will regret the things you did do.

One of my favorite quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson says this: “Don’t waste life in doubts and fears; spend yourself on the work before you, well assured that the right performance of this hour's duties will be the best preparation for the hours and ages that will follow it.” Prepare yourself the best you can and take your fear head on. Do not let the risks stop you from following your dream.
